# TAP files for Happy embroidery machines

What a Happy TAP file is, how it differs from DST, how to load it from USB or the network, and how to digitize a logo and export a TAP file in your browser.

> **Short answer:** TAP is the native design format of Happy embroidery machines (Happy Japan). It stores the stitches, jumps, trims and colour changes in the same compact way as a Tajima DST, without DST's text header. Happy machines read both TAP and DST. EasyDigitizer can digitize a logo and export a TAP file from any browser, or convert an existing DST, PES, EXP, JEF or VP3 to TAP.

## What a TAP file is

A TAP file is a *machine file*: a list of needle movements in order. Each record says how far to move in X and Y and whether that move is a stitch, a jump, or a colour stop. Trims are made from short runs of jumps, which the machine turns into a cut (see "Cut at jump data" below).

In practice, a TAP file contains the same kind of stitch records as a DST, but without the 512-byte text header that DST files start with. That's why converting between the two keeps the stitches exactly the same.

What a TAP file **doesn't** hold:

- **Thread colours.** It records *that* the colour changes, not *what* the new colour is. The machine shows its own default colours until you assign needles.
- **Objects and settings.** Density, underlay, pull compensation and stitch angles are baked into the needle positions. You can't turn a satin back into an editable satin from a TAP; you need the working file or to re-digitize.

## TAP or DST for a Happy?

Both work. Happy's control panels read TAP and DST (and the Tajima-Barudan and Tajima-ZSK variants), and the Pattern read **Data format** setting can be left on **Auto**. Happy's own documentation describes TAP as able to carry machine settings, such as the needle sequence, along with the design.

EasyDigitizer's TAP files carry the stitches, jumps, trims and colour stops. Needle assignment is set at the panel, the same as for a DST, using the colour list on the production worksheet. If a design reads oddly as TAP, try the DST from the same export: it's the same stitches.

## How to export a TAP file with EasyDigitizer

1. **Open the app** at [app.easydigitizer.com](https://app.easydigitizer.com/) in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, on Windows, Mac, iPad, Android, Chromebook or Linux.
2. **Pick what you're stitching**: caps, polos, tees, hoodies, jackets, beanies, bags, towels or patches. Density, underlay, pull compensation and sequencing follow the fabric. Cap profiles sew centre-out and bottom-up.
3. **Drop in your artwork** (PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF or AI). It's auto-digitized into fills, satin columns and running lines, and every object stays editable with the hand tools.
4. **Choose your Happy machine profile**, then play back the stitch-out and check the realistic preview.
5. **Export.** Each export includes **TAP and DST** together with PES, EXP, JEF and VP3, and the production worksheet lists the colour sequence with thread codes.

Already have a design in another format? Open the DST, PES/PEC, EXP, JEF or VP3 file, check it in the stitch player, and export it as TAP.

## Getting the file onto the machine

**USB stick.** Copy the TAP to the root of a stick formatted FAT or FAT32 on a PC, then load it from the machine panel. If you see **E-103** (data format), check the file is TAP or DST and that Data format is on Auto; **E-131** means the machine can't see the stick, so reinsert it fully.

**Network.** If you send designs to the machine over the network with Happy's PC software, point EasyDigitizer's **Send to machine** destination at the folder that software sends from, and finished files land there directly. Send to machine works in Chrome or Edge on a computer; in other browsers the file downloads and you copy it across.

## Machine settings that affect a TAP file

- **Cut at jump data.** The machine trims when it sees this many jumps in a row. Set too low and it trims inside fills; too high and it leaves long jump threads.
- **Stitch sweeper.** Removes very short stitches when a design is read. It's the first thing to try when thread breaks always happen in the same spot.
- **Width data all.** Widens or narrows every satin in memory. A leftover value here changes every design you sew, so check it if satins suddenly look wrong.

## TAP file checklist

- Right size for the hoop or cap frame you'll use.
- A short, simple file name, especially for older machines.
- The colour list from the worksheet next to the machine.
- The working file saved, so you can edit and re-export instead of resizing the TAP.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I convert a DST to TAP?

Yes. Open the DST in EasyDigitizer and export: the stitches are identical, only the file wrapper changes. Opening, viewing and converting are free to try; exporting is part of the per-design price or a subscription.

### Why does my TAP file show the wrong colours on the Happy?

TAP files only store colour changes, not colours. Assign the right thread to each needle at the panel, using the colour list sent with the file.

### Can I resize a TAP file?

Only slightly. Scaling a machine file stretches the stitches without recalculating density, so keep changes to roughly 10–15 % and resize the working file for anything bigger.

### Do I need Windows to make TAP files?

No. EasyDigitizer runs in the browser, so you can make TAP files on a Mac, iPad, Chromebook or Linux computer as well as on Windows.
